BB 36: Looking for Jesus

“With the Inferno expansion upon us, new seeds have been planted in the ongoing evolution of EVE Online. With every expansion comes new trials and challenges, game-changing mechanics and fresh ideas. After nine years and seventeen expansions, EVE has grown far more than most other MMOGs can hope for. Which expansions have brought the highs and lows, which have been the best and the worst for EVE Online?” Linked from Freebooted

I’m gona subvert this Blog Banter just a little bit; if the fine gents of freebooted will indulge me a little bit. You see to me the real question here is not which expansion I liked the best, as (almost) every one of them has brought something new and fun to the game. I could pick any of them since I joined (Trinity being the first) and find something I loved, and something I hated. For me Incarna* is the pivot point in the history of eve’s expansions. It was here that we moved from the Jesus Feature to the current iteration paradigm. Since I have been finding it hard to get excited about Inferno, the real question for me here is did I prefer it in the Jesus era?
When it comes to Jesus Features my favourite out of the bag would be Dominion. Sure it never achieved what it was intended to do but it changed sov warfare for the better. On the other hand Post Jesus Crucible was a pretty awesome period of time where all kinds of areas got the attention they had been needing for so long.
Here is what has been bothering me about Inferno; sure its filled with some great content (missiles), and some needed iterations(faction war), but despite the much broadcasted “theme” of WAR I really have trouble pin pointing something to be REALLY excited about. Nothing is that game changing and I miss that about the old Jesus Features. I’ve already pointed out that Dominion was a great expansion, and I admit that Dominion is a classic example of CCP going for Jesus and ending up with Frankenstein. But it did still change how we played and expanded the universe. Inferno (and Crucible before it) just hasn’t done that for me.
On the other hand, again using Dominion as a good example, Jesus features often failed to move the world in the direction CCP wanted it too and, because they immediately moved on to building the next messiah we never saw any effort to correct the mistakes made. The worry of the players, including myself was that we might end up with a universe of Frankensteins and never actually get the second coming.
It’s a tough call, but I honestly think the change is for the better. I think CCP needs to bring in a few new Jesus features every now and then, just because it keeps us on our toes and expanded the universe (for better or worse). Perhaps we can beg them for a middle ground? Low hanging fruit, iteration and a few Minor Deities features?
Oh I still haven’t named my favourite expansion have I? (although I’ve hinted that Crucible is the best of the Post Jesus feature era). So here it is just to satisfy Stan:
My favourite expansion of all time, has always been, and always will be… the next one (whatever that is right now).
*Oh just so I stick a little to the BBs original scope, this was the worst, hands down. It made me worried for the future of eve.

Haha, perfect – a religiously flippant subversive banter, my favourite. Nice work :).

Also, best line ever: “…going for Jesus and ending up with Frankenstein.”
